The summer heat wave and drought (June-Aug), the winter flooding (January-March) and the early spring drought (Mar-June) have all combined to make for a very challenging 9 months.

Trustees Nigel and Yvonne were very pleased to meet some of the recent In Memoriam Donors and members of their families up at Hampshire Farm Meadows on Saturday 26th September.

A small intrepid group of 4 decided to brave the threats of Storm Dave on Easter Saturday to continue work on clearing grass and weeds from around the Arboretum trees.

On 28th of February The Friends of Hampshire Meadow held another useful, if muddy, work party up in the arboretum.

It was a lovely sunny morning for the Friends of Hampshire Farm Meadows work party. We splashed our way through the puddles and mud up to the arboretum.

There was a tree planting work party on 1st November 2025. Thirteen keen tree planters turned up and quickly got stuck into planting 33 trees of various species around the site.

On the 27th September we celebrated a significant moment with the unveiling of the second sign at the Arboretum, which contains an information board on one side and in-memoriam plaques on the other.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Richard Galloway, a valued trustee and one of the founding members of EVMA. Richard passed away peacefully on 25th September 2025.

We are delighted to announce that all three In Memoriam binders are now in place and available for public viewing.

Summer Drought Challenges

The summer heat wave and drought (June-Aug), the winter flooding (January-March) and the early spring drought (Mar-June) have all combined to make for a very challenging 9 months.

As a consequence we have lost approximately 50 trees with many of the others only just about hanging on by the skin of their teeth. On the brighter side, most of the oaks are now thriving, we have not lost any elms and have only lost 2 trees from the avenue. We are still confident that we can be successful but in order to reduce future losses, from now on we need to adhere to the following policy as closely as possible.

  • Follow a slightly less adventurous tree selection policy
  • Limit planting to a maximum of 15 trees annually, ideally in close proximity to each other
  • Choose smaller bare rooted specimens
  • Only plant at the optimum time (late November/early December)
  • Use hydration bags
  • Thoroughly mulch at time of planting

The next planting session is being planned for one of the following dates:- Sat 28th Nov / Sat 5th Dec / Sat 12th Dec

Concerning tree identification labelling, we have held off doing this until the trees have established and grown a little larger but certainly some now have reaches this stage so we will start by using a relatively low cost simple hand written but durable labelling system before moving on to a more conventional permanent system once the guards come down.
